Shiba Park

The Shiba Park area is one of the oldest parks in Japan. In the Edo period (1603-1867), the site was the precincts of Zojoji Temple, and was opened as a park by an ordinance of the Grand Council of State establishing parks in 1873.

After World War II, the park was separated from Zojoji Temple due to the policy of separation of church and state, and the outer perimeter of the site became Shiba Park, a metropolitan park, and this corner of the park is now Minato Ward Shiba Park after various vicissitudes. In 2004, a basic plan was drawn up at a workshop for ward residents to share their opinions, and the park was developed based on this plan in 2006.

The park is now equipped with manhole toilets for disaster use, kamado benches, rainwater storage tanks, solar-powered lighting facilities, clocks, etc., to enhance its function as a wide-area evacuation site. In addition, while utilizing existing trees, new trees were planted and the entire site was greened, including the use of grass in the plaza, and the parkway was paved with water-retaining pavement to prevent heat island effects.

With an area of 13,522.06 square meters, the park is a place where anyone can relax, surrounded by history and culture.
